Phlebotomist – Inpatient

Job Description

Job Summary:

• The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing phlebotomy and various technical, non-technical, and clerical functions while following laboratory protocols and supporting inpatient laboratory services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Perform venipuncture collections accurately and efficiently according to laboratory protocols.
• Perform capillary collections accurately and efficiently according to laboratory protocols.
• Follow proper protocols for legal blood alcohol collections.
• Determine appropriate specimen requirements and evaluate specimen acceptability using standard collection techniques.
• Obtain blood specimens via indwelling lines following universal safety precautions.
• Perform limited CLIA-waived testing according to laboratory protocols as defined by site assignment.
• Utilize the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) to support laboratory services.
• Perform order entry and release laboratory orders.
• Follow site-specific EPIC registration and patient check-in procedures.
• Resolve specimen identification and order-related issues.
• Contact patients for repeat blood draws when needed.
• Collect and handle specimens according to laboratory instructions and testing protocols.
• Prioritize specimen collections appropriately.
• Respond to blood draw requests in a timely manner.
• Identify patients and label specimens according to laboratory protocols.
• Process specimens according to testing protocols while maintaining specimen identification accuracy.
• Prepare specimens for transport to alternate testing laboratory sites.
• Perform EKGs, monitoring events, drug screen collections, breath alcohol testing, and spirometry as defined by site assignment.
• Set up cultures according to laboratory protocols as defined by site assignment.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and functional work area.
• Stock laboratory supplies and monitor expiration dates.
• Assist in training new employees and students in phlebotomy techniques and assigned duties.
• Perform maintenance duties and scheduled checklist duties accurately and on time.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Education:

• High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Graduate of an approved Phlebotomy Training Program or an accredited Medical Assistant Program preferred.

Licenses & Certifications:

• ASCP Certification preferred.

Required Skills & Experience:

• Minimum 6 months of related healthcare experience with direct patient contact.
