Phlebotomist – Inpatient

Job Description

Job Summary:

• The Inpatient Phlebotomist performs venipuncture, capillary collections, specimen processing, laboratory order management, and other technical, clerical, and patient care functions while supporting inpatient laboratory services and maintaining laboratory safety and quality standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collections according to laboratory protocols.
• Collect blood specimens from indwelling lines using universal safety precautions.
• Verify patient identity and label specimens accurately throughout the collection process.
• Process, prepare, and transport specimens according to testing protocols.
• Perform laboratory order entry, release orders, and resolve specimen or order issues.
• Contact patients for repeat collections when required.
• Perform CLIA-waived testing, EKGs, drug screen collections, breath alcohol testing, spirometry, and culture setup as assigned.
• Maintain laboratory supplies, monitor expiration dates, and keep work areas clean and organized.
• Assist with training new employees and students on phlebotomy techniques and laboratory procedures.
• Complete scheduled maintenance and laboratory checklist duties.

Preferred Education:

• Graduate of approved phlebotomy training program or an accredited Medical Assistant program.
• High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Certifications & Licensure:

• ASCP certification.

Required Experience:

• Minimum 6 months of healthcare experience with direct patient contact.
• Inpatient phlebotomy experience required.
• High-volume blood draw experience required.

Required Skills:

• Inpatient phlebotomy.
• High-volume venipuncture and capillary collections.
• Specimen collection, labeling, processing, and handling.
• EPIC EMR and Laboratory Information System (LIS).
• Patient identification and specimen verification.
