Job Description

Job Summary:

  • Performs phlebotomy procedures for inpatients, outpatients, and walk-in patients.
  • Responsible for specimen collection, processing, and maintaining accurate documentation while ensuring high-quality patient care.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary collections (routine, STAT, timed).
  • Collect and process blood specimens accurately and efficiently.
  • Assist patients with urine and stool collection instructions.
  • Maintain proper documentation and workflow organization.
  • Operate lab systems for test orders, reporting, and tracking.
  • Handle accessioning, specimen processing, and registration tasks.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, and lab staff.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, infection control, and lab protocols.
  • Support training of new staff and students as needed.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. – Required.

Experience:

  • 2–3+ years preferred (hospital, transplant, or donor settings highly preferred).
  • Required One year hospital experience (including venipuncture experience).

Skills and Abilities:

  • Must have ability to use standard office equipment (telephones, fax machines, computer terminals, etc.). – Required.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality of work related information. – Required.
  • Must possess good communication and organization skills.
  • Must be able to work efficiently under stressful conditions and time constraints.
  • Strong experience with difficult draws required.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Knowledge of lab procedures and specimen handling.

Work Environment:

  • Fast-paced, high-volume setting.
  • Exposure to blood and biohazard materials.
  • Requires standing, walking, bending, and lifting (up to 50 lbs.).

  • May require weekends, holidays, or on-call based on department needs.
  • Must maintain strict patient confidentiality.
